For the coming years, the Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) will expand the number of driving lanes of highway A2 in order to diminish the traffic congestions and the coherent economical damage. Project highway A2 is sub-divided in several parts which will be executed by different combinations of contractors. One of these projects is highway A2 between traffic interchanges Holendrecht and Maarssen. This project will be executed as a Design and Construct contract by the combination A2HoMa (contractors: Boskalis, KWS and Mourik). This part of highway A2 is the most challenging one from a geotechnical point of view since a thick layer of soil with little bearing capacity is present over the whole project location.
Arthe Civil & Structure b.v. provided its geotechnical expertise to the combination A2 Holendrecht–Maarssen (Boskalis). The following subjects were assessed by geotechnical engineers of Arthe Civil & Structure b.v.:
- Geotechnical design for the future highway (settlements and slability);
- Inventory of solutions for the connection between the existing, consolidated part and the new, un-consolidated part of the highway;
- Geotechnical analysis and design of the connections between the sand-founded highway and the pile-founded structures;
- Analysis of the effect of the embankment load on the present structures and dikes;
- Monitoring of construction.
Inventiveness and flexibility are needed to tackle the complex problems that arise when reconstructing a highway which is used during all construction stages. During construction, there was an intensive communication with the preparation and construction departments of the combination A2HoMa.
