Project description

The project ‘Broadening A15’ contains the capacity expansion of the approx. 37 kilometers of the A15 highway between the ‘Maasvlakte’ and the Vaanplein junction. This part of the A15 is the most important connection between the harbor and industrial area of Rotterdam, the surrounding residential areas and the (European) hinterland.
The project includes the following items:

  • Improvement of the traffic circulation and safety on the A15 through the construction of additional traffic lanes and traffic management systems.
  • The construction of a new, larger lifting bridge, replacing the present Botlek bridge, crossing the Oude Maas river.
  • Maintenance of the A15 during the coming 25 years.

Furthermore, this project comprises the Management of these 37 kilometers of the A15 (by its DBFM-contract), which makes it the largest assignment tendered at once in the history of Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch Department of Waterways and Public Works).


The following activities were carried out by Arthe staff members:
  • Geotechnical design of road embankment (settlements and stability);
  • Geotechnical design of piled embankments;
  • Analysis of the influence on the present interfaces (i.e. the foundations of existent structural works, cables and pipes), resulting from the intended heightening of the embankment;
  • Detailed geotechnical design for locations with little working space in a short amount of time. This concerned designing with lightweight materials (e.g. EPS and/or pumice gravel) and a geogrid reinforced sheetpile wall;
  • Final check of the raised road embankments by detailed monitoring of the settlement plates;
  • Examination of the dikes in conformity with the TAW;
  • Geotechnical supervision.
