PROJECT: ESFAHAN MASS TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
In Esfahan, the second largest city of Iran, a mass transportation system is being realized. One of the priority lines of the mass transportation system is the underground North-South line through the city, which has a total length of 12.5 km and includes 15 underground stations.
Part of the North-South line will be constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). The section concerned passes underneath a number of historical monuments and crosses the Zayandeh Rud river.
Two single-track tunnel-tubes are to be drilled, each with an outer diameter of 6,890 mm. The tunnel-tubes will be bored using a TBM with an earth pressure balance shield (EPB). The tunnels will be bored through quaternary clay, sand and gravel deposits (recent terraces and alluviums).
The main contractor, Alamoot Bridge & Building Engineering Co has awarded Arthe civil & structure bv the contract for both a part of the detailed engineering works for the tunnel and for supervision of the tunnel boring process.
Engineering and consultancy works executed by Arthe Civil & Structure bv include the following subjects:
- Calculation of surface settlements due to tunnel boring process and the influence on buildings and monuments;
- Design of the grout mix and the grouting process in general in relation to possible surface settlements;
- Analysis of face stability for the different soil types that may be encountered;
- Advise on the use of foam in relation to encountered soil types;
- Set-up of the starting procedure for the TBM;
- Technical evaluation of the supplied TBM and the worksite in general;
- Evaluation of assembly and testing of TBM;
- Technical evaluation of the segment construction and the segment factory;
- Supervision of site- and excavation activities.
