GEOTECHNICS
The basis of every building- or construction project lies in the soil or rock on which it is to be founded. A reliable model of the interaction between soil (or rock) and the structure is often the key to the successful realization of the project.
Arthe Civil & Sructure bv has experience with both soil- and rock-modeling for a broad scale of projects. Consultancy services and design assignments lie within a wide range of subjects within the field of geotechnical engineering. Our experience includes common international standards and guidelines (NEN, DIN, BS, ASTM, API).
Site investigation and laboratory testing
For any reliable soil- or rock model, characterisation of the soil- or rock material and the soil- or rock mass are a first requirement. We set-up and supervise both on- and off-shore site investigations and draw up laboratory testing programmes based on encountered soil/rock types and project requirements.
Earthworks
Successful earthworks designs are needed for a wide range of building, civil engineering and infrastructure projects. Arthe is experienced in planning, investigation, design and construction supervision of earthworks. We can provide specialist geotechnical advice for innovative earthworks projects and have experience with advanced soil-modeling methods. Our services include:
- Settlement and stability analyses;
- Rail- and road-embankment design;
- Consultancy on geotechnical requirements for building-site preparation;
- Design and engineering of constructions based on the reduced settlement-principle;
- Innovative earthworks reinforcement and slope stabilisation techniques (e.g. soil nailing and geogrid-reinforcement).
Soil improvement
To achieve the engineering requirements for building or infrastructural construction in areas of adverse soil conditions, (soft) soil treatment is more and more becoming a major geotechnical issue. Apart from technical boundary conditions, available construction time is often a major aspect to be taken into consideration. Arthe C&S has extensive experience with soil improvement techniques including:
- Dynamic compaction, vibro-compaction, stone columns;
- Reinforced soil foundations;
- Grouting techniques, including compensation grouting, permeation grouting, chemical grouting.
Foundation engineering
A foundation is that part of a building, bridge, tunnel, or any other kind of structure which transmits loads directly to the underlying soil. Design of a foundation should be thus that the underlying soil can support the transmitted loads under all circumstances within acceptable limits of deformation. Conventional foundation designs include shallow foundations (footings or a raft) and deep foundations (piles). Non-conventional foundation techniques include buoyancy foundations, box (caisson) foundations and deep shaft foundations. Arthe Civil & Structure is experienced in design and engineering of a broad spectrum of foundation types for a.o.:
- Domestic, commercial and industrial building;
- Infrastructure works, including road- and railway bridges, viaducts and tunnels, sound-barriers.
Geomonitoring
As soil and rock are natural materials, heterogeneity of soil- and rock material and especially the soil- and rock mass can be expected. Even the most extensive ground investigation and laboratory testing programme can not prevent the risk of encountering unexpected ground conditions during construction. It is therefore essential to compare actual and predicted behaviour of ground and structure for large and complex projects, but also for relatively straightforward projects as the construction of earthworks. Field observations, including quantative measurements obtained by field instrumentation, provide the means for safe, efficient and economical design and construction. Arthe Civil & Structure b.v. is experienced with setting-up and excecuting the following geomonitoring programmes:
- Monitoring of settlements, consolidation, stability and general performance of embankments and embankment dams on soft ground during and after construction;
- Monitoring of short- and long-term slope stability of excavated and natural slopes in soil and rock;
- Monitoring of stability and performance of underground excavations and tunnels, including influence on nearby structures;
- Monitoring and interpretation of the performance of (piled)-foundations.
