PROJECT: GROYNES FOR THE FUTURE
| Description: | Design of a sustainable river groyne |
| Client: | CUR / Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management |
| Project partner: | ECOFYS |
| Contact person: | ir. R.W. den Hertog (M.Sc.) |
On account of a competition "Groynes for the future" (organized by the Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management & CUR), Arthe Civil & Structure b.v. cooperated with Ecofys, in order to submit a design for a sustainable river groyne. The presented sketch design having the name “E-krib” represents an optimal combination between safety during high water levels and shipping properties. Furthermore, the potential of streaming river water is used to generate (sustainable) energy. The design of “E-krib” not only deals with the expected increase of high river water discharges, but it also delivers a solution to the current energy and climate crisis.
Arthe developed the hydraulic engineering and geotechnical design of the E-krib. To work out the design aspect to generate sustainable energy, Arthe cooperated with Ecofys. Based on 21 requirements subdivided among four categories, a sketch design was created having the following characteristic features:
- Increasing high river water discharge by lowering present groyne and decreasing the slope steepness;
- Applying an innovative head construction and permeable upper part of groyne, in order to decrease the sediment exchange with the fairway;
- Applying geotextile elements in flattened slopes of groynes, so that the excavated (polluted) soil can locally be reused;
- Stimulating nature development along the river banks;
- Generating energy for 70 households per groyne per year;
- Less maintenance by using prefab materials;
- Lower Life Cycle Cost (LCC) by exploiting sustainable energy, working within a partnership, and less maintenance for groyne and fairway.
